Queer Book Club

I’m not really sure what changed my mind.

Earlier today, I genuinely didn’t think I had it in me. Everything in me wanted to go home and isolate.

But, I went to the book club anyway.

And I’m really glad I did.

There were about twelve of us at there. I hadn’t even had time to buy the book yet, so I asked if it was okay for me to go, even if I hadn’t read the book. I mostly listened. I watched people think out loud. I heard different theories, interpretations, emotional reactions. I got to sit inside other people’s minds for a while.

Honestly? It was kind of perfect.

It was intellectually stimulating without being demanding. It wasn’t highly structured, but I felt like everything had a natural flow to it . Being around other queer people felt especially grounding, there’s a softness and ease there that’s hard to explain unless you’ve felt it. And the fact that some of the books discussed are banned books? Huge bonus. 🤌🏻

Everyone was chill. Friendly. Welcoming. No pressure.

Next time, I’ll actually have read the book, and I’m curious what it’ll be like to hear other people’s interpretations while also holding my own. I already know that kind of exchange suits me, the slow unfolding of ideas, the exchange of different perspectives.

For someone who often struggles with social energy, this felt like finding the right frequency.

I’m really glad I went.

And I’m really looking forward to going back.
