Grounding Tools

These are tools I was introduced to while working with a therapist. Over the years, I've tried a lot of different grounding techniques and sensory tools, but these are the two that have been the most helpful for me personally.

As someone who struggles with dissociation and a history of self-harm, I’ve found that having concrete, physical tools can sometimes make it easier to reconnect with the present moment when my mind or body feels far away. They may not be the right fit for everyone, but they've made a meaningful difference for me.

Little Ouchies Mini Grippie

The Little Ouchie is one of my favorite grounding tools because it's small, discreet, and easy to take anywhere. It fits comfortably in a pocket, making it something I can reach for when I'm out in public and need a little extra support without drawing attention to myself.

For me, the pressure from the spikes provides enough sensory input to help me reconnect with the present moment when I feel dissociated or overwhelmed. It doesn't hurt, but it gives my nervous system something concrete to focus on and helps me come back to myself when I start feeling far away. Like any grounding tool, your experience may be different.

Acupressure Mat

If I'm being completely honest, this is the only grounding tool I've found that consistently helps when self-harm urges are particularly intense. The sensation is strong enough to hold my attention and keep me connected to my body when everything in me wants to disconnect. It doesn't make the feelings disappear, but it often gives me enough space to ride out the urge without acting on it.

The link below is for the acupressure mat that I personally purchased and have used for years. I bought mine through Amazon, so that's where the link will take you.

If I'm being honest, I'd prefer to recommend a product from a smaller company or link directly to the manufacturer, but this is the specific mat I have firsthand experience with and can confidently speak to.

You may also come across the Shakti Mat while researching acupressure mats. It has a strong reputation and many people seem to love it. However, I haven't personally invested in one, so I can't tell you whether it offers a meaningfully different experience than more affordable mats. Because of that, I'd rather recommend the product I've actually used than speculate about one I haven't.
